Two Great Canister Vacuums That Never Give Up

Reviewer: Paul Good

From our readers:

“Paul, I’ve gone through three vacuums in the last ten years! Some were ok at the beginning, but began to have parts break off or connections go bad in less than a year.

I have a mix of hardwood floors and low to medium pile carpets. When I go to vacuum the cat fur off the hardwood floors, the canister vent blows it away faster than I can catch it. I’m tired of throwing away money on vacuum cleaners that don’t work, fall apart and then have no parts available!  Does anyone make a really good one that will last?”    J W, MA

“J W, there are many choices in this category and it might surprise you that after doing our research, the most heavily promoted vacuums never made the cut.

Still, we found two high quality canister vacuums, at two different price levels, that not only clean extremely well, but have a track record of constant refinement, solid performance and long term user satisfaction. So, here’s what we found.” PG

Now lets see what those specs really do for you….

Vacuums, it turns out, are very personal.

Like it or not, each of us develop a “relationship” with our vacuums, usually as friend or foe, in a relatively short time.

Ideally, we want it to have nail pulling suction, but be very quiet, have the most important accessories stored on board, but be light to carry, collect lots of dirt, but not let any of it back in the room….. to name a few.

And then, should we choose a canister vacuum or an upright?

Any wonder why we might have trouble finding the right product?

The best way we’ve found to sort through the complicated is to first determine what the product is going to be primarily used for. Next, determine the core functions that really matter to do that well and then find the best products that have those qualities.

Simple, right?

Well, that’s why we’re here at GreatStuffThatWorks, to help you sort it out.

First, when choosing between an upright or canister design, it usually comes down to what you have the most of:

A: Lots of deep to medium pile carpets and very few bare floors or

B: Just the opposite….. a mix of hardwood, tile and low to medium pile carpets.

For the most part, a quality upright vac is often a better choice if your decor is more like column A. Although manufacturers would like you to believe that either type of vacuum will do a great job on both, customer feedback and test results just don’t bear that out.

A high quality upright, with a generally wider, heavier beater head, can often do a better job pulling deep dirt out of a deep pile carpet than most canister vacuums. The few canister vacuums that get close, lose some of their portability advantage buy adding a wide, heavy power head to try to match the upright’s deep pile performance.

But, when it comes to easily switching tools, going up and down stairs, reaching up high or cleaning no-carpet surfaces well, a quality canister design can cover a much wider variety of vacuuming situations more effectively.

Because we had many more requests to research canister vacuums, for this review we’re focusing on that design.

——————————————-

There’s no shortage of canister vacuums out there and several are very well promoted.

But our research found that some of the most familiar brand names (here’s a big surprise?) did not make the GreatStuffThatWorks cut when it came to having the best, overall performance and high customer satisfaction.

When the dust settled, (couldn’t resist) two models of the Miele line of canister vacuums qualified as GreatStuffThatWorks products because both provide exceptional core performance at two different price levels.

Miele offers a wide number of canister vacuum models that vary by what combination of features are bundled together within each model line.

When you sort it all out, my experts and I believe the best balanced combination of performance, features and convenience is the Miele Libra (S5) model.

It comes with everything a great, versatile canister system should have to really clean hardwood, tile and low to medium pile carpet with great convenience. (but there is one cool accessory tool that, if you have pets, you’ll want to check out. More on that shortly.)

Part of my personal buying decision and therefore, always included in our research, is a look at the quality track record of the company making or distributing the product. So, here’s a quick bit about Miele, the company.

Miele was founded in Germany 112 years ago by Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann.

They founded the company on the premise that “success is only possible in the long term if one is totally and utterly convinced of the quality of one’s products”.

A family owned and run company since its inception, they have been leaders in product innovation and invention.

In 1889 their first product was a butter churning machine. A number of products followed and by 1929 they had created Europe’s first electric dishwasher.  By 1956 the first fully automatic washing machine. In 1958, the first domestic tumble dryer,  in 1978 the first microprocessor controlled washing machine, dryer and dishwashers and then in 1997 the first washing machine with a program for hand washable woolens.

Miele’s first product introduced to the United States was their innovative vacuum cleaners.  Their small, powerful Miele Vortex suction system, coupled with a highly effective AirClean Sealed System of air filtration and a focus on compatibility of most accessories across old and new models, demonstrated their drive to not only innovate, but continually design for long term value and performance. (i’m told many of the current top executives got their start driving vacuums around to US dealers.)

That commitment has also earned them the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval (see FYI (1) at the end), a third party warranty of quality few vacuum cleaners have achieved.

So, what makes a great vacuum cleaner great?

From our research, to be a great canister vacuum, most people want it to:

1.) Develop powerful suction.

2.) Be lightweight and easy to maneuver.

3.) Be quiet enough to talk over.

4.) Retract and store its own cord.

5.) Hold its regular accessories on board.

6.) Have a strong, independent motor powerhead for carpets.

7.) Have a convenient switch to quickly turn the powerhead off when on floors.

8.) Provide a long reach from the wall plug to the work area.

9.) Include a telescopic, adjustable powered wand for easy reaching and not bending over.

10.) Leave the air in the room at least as clean as when you started to vacuum. And…..

11.) Be well made and easy to service. (yeh, its the top 11).

Miele builds every canister vacuum in their line with the same powerful Vortex motor, which means from the most expensive model to the least, the core power is always there.  What changes as you move up the line is what you get included. And that’s what creates these two great options, based upon your needs and budget.

Libra (S5 281) and the Delphi (S2 121) both have the same powerful suction. No vacuum will pull nails out of the floor (just a guy thing), but both will powerfully pull sand and various forms of dirt out of a low to medium pile carpet or pick up from small pebbles to animal fur from hard surfaces with great velocity.

Because the entire line vents its air filtered exhaust out of the top of the unit and because you can quickly switch off the beater bar on these two models right at the handle, transitioning from carpet to hardwood floor is easy.  No more playing “chase the dust bunny” as the air flow pushes it away from you.

With most vacuums, powerful equals lots of noise, but not with the Miele.  Although it’s not silent, even on the high suction setting (and you have 6 levels to choose from), you can still talk with the person next to you at a relatively normal level.

Miele S5 Libra 6 Suction level selector and controls close A1 300x281 The Best Canister Vacuums Miele S5 Libra & S2 Delphi

Miele Libra 6 Suction Levels Control & Top Air Vent-GreatStuffThatWorks.com

Move the suction selector dial on the base to the picture of an Ear and the noise level is comfortably within conversation range.  In my personal tests, I moved the suction selector even lower so I could easily clean my lighter area rugs without pulling them into the beater head. (Nice)

If I want exercise, I’ll go to the gym.

Most of us prefer to not work out with our vacuum cleaner.  But that’s exactly what happens with most vacuums.

Miele designed the Libra base (about 13 lbs.) and especially the smaller Delphi base (about 9 lbs), to be a weight that is very comfortable for most to carry up or down stairs or from room to room.

To make carrying the complete vacuum even easier, Miele designed attachment points on the wand and the base so you can do two very handy things:

1.) Carry the complete vacuum, wand and base, in one hand, so you can hold onto the railing going up stairs. (and, by the way, when you’re cleaning the stairs, the base units of both are designed specifically to sit upright on a stair, so you don’t have to hold them all the way up.)

2.) With the base vertical or horizontal, you can temporarily park the wand upright while you pause to pick up Jimmy’s clothes or move a piece of furniture. No more hearing the wand crash into furniture or constantly bending down to pick up the hose….. again.

(User Tip: When you go to park the wand in a base slot, tilt the wand handle forward as you slide it into the guide. That’s it. Now you’re a parking pro. PG)

Both the Libra and the Delphi can park the wand when the base unit is either vertical or horizontal (on its wheels). (3 places on the Libra and 2 on the Delphi).

Speaking of wheels, both the Libra (S5) and Delphi (S2) are easy to roll due to a well designed pivot arrangement and wheels that spin 360 degrees.  On both carpet and hard surfaces the base will quickly follow you like a puppy. (if he’s not hiding from the vacuum cleaner.)  In fact, Miele contoured the bottom of the base like a ramp so it slides over thresholds easily.

360 degree Wheels & Ramp Base Design – S5 same except vertical parking slots are on sides.

One of the reasons we picked the Libra and the Delphi models is that they are the first in the S5 and S2 lines respectively, that include the connections for both a powered wand and the Electro Comfort powerhead (beater bar) attachments within the package.

Miele Libra Wand Parked on bottom close wood fl A11 163x300 The Best Canister Vacuums Miele S5 Libra & S2 Delphi

Miele Electro Comfort PowerHead Parked-GreatStuffThatWorks.com

Without this power feature built into the base unit, you can only use their air driven attachments. We found that for the carpets and floor, the powered attachments were simply…… more powerful.

Also, by opting for the powered base, you become fully compatible with the whole line of powerheads and accessories.

So, if you decide next year shag carpet is your new decorating flair, you can buy one of the two larger, wider, powered beater bar accessories and just plug them in. Deep pile carpet is their specialty.

A functional difference between the Libra and the Delphi is how you access the bag compartment. On the Libra you press a latch to access the bag.  On the Delphi, you squeeze the hose locks at the base of the hose and pop the hose off before you open the door, because its S2 powered hose connection is external vs integrated into the S5 case.

Its easy. Not as easy as a latch, but the Delphi is over $300 less for the same vacuum power, bag size, stainless steel telescopic wand, powerhead and more lightness (since they’re both pretty light).

But, there are other differences, so let’s cover a few of the more subtle features between the Libra and Delphi that make one cost more than the other.

The Libra (S5) clicks into each of the 6 suction levels, on the Delphi (S2), it just points, the Libra comes with the advanced, Sealed Air bag chamber system, the Delphi has the standard seal.

The shell casing on the Libra appears to be even more solid and heavier than the Delphi, but that’s part of the reason the Libra is a bit heavier. Additional trim and surface color is extended to more areas in the Libra than in the Delphi and the Libra‘s carry handle on the base is softer and more streamlined than on its smaller sister, the Delphi.

There is one sacrifice to size and lightness that did make a difference to Delphi vs Libra users when it came to larger rooms.  The Libra has a power cord that is about 3.5 ft. longer than the Delphi. (the 29.5 ft. vs 33 ft. reach we talk about elsewhere).

When it comes to included accessories, here’s the skinny.  The Libra model includes a great tool for hard surfaces called the Parquet Twister (SBB-300-3).

One tour with this tool on your hardwood floors and you’ll wonder where this attachment has been all your hardwood life. When my wife tested it on our hardwood and tile her comment was “Wow, this tool is really good. I wish we had it.” (The personal dilemma with finding and testing only great products. You want them all.)

Miele Parquet Twister 300 Tool at Baseboard A 300x225 The Best Canister Vacuums Miele S5 Libra & S2 Delphi

Miele Parquet Twister 300 Tool at Baseboard-GreatStuffThatWorks.com

This Miele engineered tool stands on firm but gentle brushes that snag dust from tight corners.  The head twists and glides fast and tight into base boards.  And, by twisting the handle of the wand to the side as you lower it, you can slide the tool and wand flat under even very low furniture. (Very cool!)

If you buy the Delphi, which doesn’t include it, you can buy the Parquet Twister (SBB-300-3) or its XL big sister for under a $100.

Both the Libra and the Delphi come with the same small accessories: A Natural Bristle Dusting Brush, the Upholstery Nozzle and the Crevice Tool.

The difference is how they stay with you.

The Libra was built slightly larger in part to accommodate tool storage under cover.

Miele Libra On Board Tools Close 39 300x225 The Best Canister Vacuums Miele S5 Libra & S2 Delphi

The Delphi has the Vario-Clip, an external bracket that attaches to the base connection of the hose and holds the three accessories there.  It works fine and …… you’ll know quickly if you’re missing a tool. (didn’t think of that, did ya?).

Miele Vario Clip w Tools on base 66 300x225 The Best Canister Vacuums Miele S5 Libra & S2 Delphi

When it comes to winding the cord, both the Libra and the Delphi do that quickly by pressing a toe to the base mounted switch. (on the opposite side from the base mounted On/Off toe switch, which turns off both the powerhead and the vacuum simultaneously).

Our number 10 great vacuum quality (yes, we’ve covered 9 so far) that a great vacuum should have is a high ability to permanently remove dirt and allergens from your home.  Powerfully pulling dirt from the floor and then releasing it back into the air is not my idea of recycling.

If you or your family is allergic to dust, animal dander or pollens, then this vacuum will be of even more value to you.

have been tested to have one of the highest performance, Sealed Air vacuum filtration systems.

They start with the first place dirt hits, a Miele designed, multi-layer collection bag that allows the air from its Vortex motor to power through, but nearly everything else to remain. (Miele Bag Model G/N) (replacement package includes 4 G/N bags plus motor filter.)

They even designed the (Miele Bag Model G/N) bag closure so we mere humans can’t accidentally spill the dirt back into the air when changing the bag. (a big drawback of bagless systems)

Their electrostatically-charged, (similar to rubbing a balloon on your head) multi-layered bag attracts dust like a magnet. It also has an automatic door on the bag, so it seals it the moment the lid is opened. (don’t worry, it automatically unseals when the lid locks shut, if you decide to look inside.)

Miele S5 Bag Compartment w. HEPA-GreatStuffThatWorks.com

If the particles are so small they manage to get by their bag technology, the Libra has a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter installed to catch up to 99.97% of anything even smaller, down to .3 micrometers (that is 1/200th the width of a human hair). That coupled with its Sealed Air system and virtually nothing leaves this Hotel California.

The Delphi uses a very good, but less advanced bag compartment system and comes prepared to accept the same HEPA filter as the Libra, which you can add for about $50.00.

(FYI: The HEPA filter was originally developed in the 1940’s during the Manhattan Project to prevent the spread of radioactive contaminants. It soon found more peacetime uses as an effective way to filter other airborne pollutants.)

The Delphi uses the same G/N bag system and comes with the AirClean filter as standard.

Both units also have a filter on the motor intake to keep the motor free of dirt and extend its life.  A replacement for this filter comes in every new package of Miele G/N model bags. The motor is warranted for 7 years, as long as you keep the filter system maintained. (and don’t use your Miele as a water vac. Very bad idea).

The one great accessory I mentioned before, in case you have a pet lion or a smaller animal in your home, is the Turbo Mini Brush tool. (about $75.00)

Miele Turbo Mini 621 300x225 The Best Canister Vacuums Miele S5 Libra & S2 Delphi

Miele Turbo Mini Tool-GreatStuffThatWorks.com

This 5.5”  wide, air powered beater brush tool is great for pet hair and dirt pickups in small areas, like stairs, upholstery, pillows and any place else a furry friend can rub its body (like our cat). It also has a swivel collar that allows the head to twist so your wrist doesn’t have to.

Because of the great suction the Miele develops, the brush power will surprise you.  I suggest moving the suction selector down to the Ear when doing upholstery and pillows to avoid taking the fringe off your decorations. (another reason you have 6 suction selections available)

The Turbo Mini is also available as part of their CarClean Kit, along with  a slim, extended length crevice tool and a flexible mini hose with a small crevice nozzle. When you’re trying to get to tight places, like between the seat and console, the flexible hose gets in there.

Miele Car Kit in Case 64 300x225 The Best Canister Vacuums Miele S5 Libra & S2 Delphi

Miele Car Kit in Case-GreatStuffThatWorks.com

The mini hose also includes a mini brush that slides down beyond the nozzle to brush dirt from console trim or air vents. In the house, it works well for keyboards, etc. (Nice). To keep us from losing the Tubo Mini and other pieces, it comes in a hard carry case for storage. (about $150.00)

And now number 11, Well Made and Easy to Service. Miele uses a 20 year product life as their build target.

Now, that doesn’t mean nothing will ever go wrong or that you can abuse it or not maintain it.

But many manufacturers want their products to be frequently replaced.

Miele assumes you don’t want to buy a vacuum every two or three years, no matter how much you pay for it. They also have built a local service network (I spoke to several) that told me Miele supports them with both responsive service reps and parts availability.

Their vacuums come with a two year complete warranty, with seven years on the motor and 7 years on the ABS case.  Their vacuums also passed Good Housekeeping’s Research Institute testing and earned the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. (See my FYI (1) below).

So there you have it. The Libra and Delphi are both GreatStuffThatWorks products that should serve you well for years.

The Miele Libra, based upon our research, provides the best balance of benefits, performance and customer satisfaction of any canister vacuum currently on the market. So, if your budget allows, that would be our long term choice.

You can get the same superior suction power, powerhead and bag capacity as the Libra with the lighter Delphi, without some of the additional convenience features.  But you still have the ability to upgrade most accessories and add HEPA in the future, if the budget’s tight right now. (Accessory presents!)

If you need a canister vacuum that’ll do a great job and keep doing that for years, buy the Libra S5 or the Delphi S2.

The odds are very high you’ll finally have a vacuum that will qualify as a friend.

To help you get a great price with a quality merchant, we also work to track that down.

FYI (1): Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval – Established 1909

(source: www.goodhousekeeping.com FAQ’s)

How does a product earn the Good Housekeeping Seal?

Before earning the Good Housekeeping Seal, the scientists and engineers at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute (GHRI) review the product to make sure that it delivers on all claims that appear in its advertising, packaging and other informational materials. If the product does not perform as promised or does not meet established standards for quality, it cannot earn the Seal.

There are already so many labels, awards and certifications — what makes the Good Housekeeping Seal more valuable to consumers?

The Good Housekeeping Seal offer consumers the guidance they need to help them sift through the confusing clutter of claims on thousands of products on store shelves today as a result of a strict evaluation by the experts at GHRI. In addition, the Good Housekeeping Seal incorporates a limited two-year warranty, so it offers consumer protection—something other labels, certifications, editorial recommendations or consumer awards do not offer.

Are there advertising requirements to use the Good Housekeeping Seal?

Yes, but the Good Housekeeping Seal is not for sale: it was developed as a service for consumers and only products that pass our strict evaluations can earn our Seal. Every year, products apply for the Good Housekeeping Seal and fail the evaluations at the Good Housekeeping Research Institute. Those products cannot earn our Seal. The same is true for products advertised in the magazine: if the product doesn’t pass the Research Institute, Good Housekeeping rejects the advertisement. No other magazine or media outlet protects its readers by offering a Consumers’ Policy that assumes liability for its advertisers. The Good Housekeeping Seal evaluation process is open to any advertiser product or prospective advertiser’s product as long as they are eligible for consideration (please refer to the last paragraph for a list of products and services that cannot get our Seal).

FYI (2): If you have deep pile carpets or a very large area to cover and are willing to live with the extra powerhead weight, for $50.00 more than the Libra, the Callisto (S5) includes the larger powerhead and the same Parquet Twister Tool (SBB-300-3). This larger (Electro Plus SEB228) powerhead separately is $209.00.

However, along the same lines with the Delphi, if you move up to the Titan S2 for $599.00, although you do get the HEPA filter included, unfortunately upgrading to the Titan S2 does not include the same SBB-300-3 Parquet Twister tool. The Parquet Floor tool it comes with is the smaller, less flexible SBB-3. (Everything’s in the details).

My suggestion: If you want to add both the Parquet Twister and the HEPA (AH-30), stay with the Delphi and add the SBB-300-3 Parquet Twister Tool for about $69.00 and the HEPA (about $49.00).

Together you have this great floor tool and HEPA for only $17.00 more than the Titan, with better overall performance.

If you have a lot of hardwood or tile to cover, for $37.00 more, you could upgrade further to the Parquet Twister XL (SBB-400-3), the larger, even wider version of the same Parquet Twister SBB-300-3 tool. ($89.00 vs $69.00). But, some owners mentioned the size of the XL head made it harder to slip into tight corners.

All the best,

PG
